Cracking the built

The concept is based on the transformation of reality, intervening dynamically in the local architectural dialog of historical phases; with the ultimate goal of all cohabit in a uniform residential context.

Choosing this historical site as context creates a beneficial relationship for both citizens and the town centre, students become aware of the historical elements of the town and the centre benefi ts from its new uses. From our point of view every town visitor should have access to the cultural and historical identity of the town, and that’s a very important aspect. After the intervention, workingplaces of laboratory substructures and the library will replace the existing apartment buildings, when the in between ground buildings will be a part of a flexible exhibition space.

Area of interest

The design thesis deals with the incorporation of a hyperlocal use in the historical city of Ioannina (Greece), specifically in Aneksartisia Street. We designed the uses of a library, workshop area and gallery space. We address the whole block to international students, who will participate in educational programs, but also to the citizens of Ioannina.

Analysis

The aim was bringing life and movement inside the block. That’s why we created a continuous movement that will go through and penetrate the main building, will come out of it and therefore convince the people to explore the inner building block apart from the road setting.  The transition from the old-styled to the modern city marks a crack in the everyday routine that should disturb both its systems and help the transition from movement to immobility. Our perspective is that this movement is the force that cracks the building and comes out of it. Morphologically is a crack but its main function is to gather all movements on the inside of the building and as a natural way of entering light in the building.

Through this crack we create different perspectives of space, a constant changing space in matter of size. We also try to connect the perspective of the already built space with the free public space.

The whole core of the building transforms into a communication machine that allows us to choose its forms and uses. We redefine the meaning of the building, the relation between structured-unstructured and the co-existence of the old and new, marking a new historical phase: the contemporary.
